Raiders even the score with Spartans
Broad Run appeared well on its way to an outright Dulles District title after blitzing visiting Loudoun County 25-14 in the first game of Thursday's match on senior night in Ashburn.
The Spartans, playing with a lot of confidence after defeating the Raiders in five games in the teams' first meeting, scored the first seven points of the match and were never really threatened in the first game.
"We definitely came out sloppy and made a lot of mistakes," Loudoun County coach Jarod Brown said. "Broad Run being the great team that they are took advantage of it. They pounded on our mistakes."
Undaunted, the two-time defending state champion Raiders responded. Loudoun County won the next three games to collect a 14-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19 victory and earn a share of the Dulles regular season title with the Spartans.
University of New Mexico commit Juliane Hanna slammed 13 kills, to go with eight digs and three aces for Loudoun County (11-1, 18-2). Senior Robin Marsala dished out 33 assists and scooped 11 digs.
"We made some adjustments, moved some bodies around in the lineup after the first game. It was really a spur of the moment thing," Brown said. "They gelled really quickly, got a lot of energy going. We were able to use that energy over the next couple of games."
The Raiders and Spartans (11-1, 14-5) will square off in a one-match playoff Saturday, 12 p.m. at Briar Woods High School. The winner will secure a spot in the Region II tournament and the top seed in the Dulles tourney.
"Broad Run is a great team. We are not looking forward to having to play them again Saturday and then probably again down the road," Brown said. "It was good to get a win here and build some confidence ... We definitely need to come out with the same intensity. We made our adjustments tonight and I think Broad Run will come back with some adjustments and we have to be ready for that."
Notes: Broad Run's Lizzie Deane, Carolyn Pearce and Elisa Scudder were honored prior to the senior night match. Loudoun County's freshmen team finished the season at 16-0 and their junior varsity squad posted a 17-2 record.
Raider senior Emily Vandegrift rolled her ankle on the final drill of Wednesday's practice and missed Thursday's match. Vandegrift will visit her doctor Friday but Brown said she's doubtful to play Saturday.
