Leesburg votes to keep elections in May

By a 5-2 vote, Leesburg Mayor Kristen Umstattd and the Town Council voted Oct. 27 to keep the town's elections in May.

Council was considering moving the elections to November after a receiving a memo earlier this month from Dianna Price, Loudoun County Electoral Board Secretary, that said the town could possibly save thousands of dollars by approving the move.

However, the switch had to be approved by the end of this month to give the state enough time to prepare.

In the end, the majority of the council said having to act so quickly didn't allow enough time to really think about the decision, so they weren't comfortable changing the date of the 2010 elections.

Councilmen Tom Dunn and Ken Reid were the lone votes for the switch, arguing that voter turnout would increase since the elections would coincide with federal elections.
