Lyme disease project, dough for candy, helping Sophia, and more

By Kathie Felix

Lyme disease project: Girl Scouts Megan Garrett and Anna Humpton, both CountrySide residents and seniors at Potomac Falls High School, are spearheading a Lyme disease awareness project in the community. Their communication plan includes distribution of the Loudoun County Health Department’s Lyme disease brochure to area homes, a portable information display for use at community events and an article in the “CountrySide Courier” newsletter.

Anna and Megan are working on the Lyme disease project to earn a Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve. The inspiration for their good work in the community came from family members currently battling Lyme disease.

This autumn, the girls’ Lyme disease information display is making the rounds at the CountrySide and Cascades fall festivals, Barktoberfest and other venues. Megan and Anna plan to make the display available to anyone interested in using it in the future.

In preparation for their Courier article, the girls are seeking Lyme disease stories about local residents or their pets. They would like to get this information as soon as possible before Nov. 5. They can be reached online at lymecontact@comcast.net.

Dough for candy: Cascades Center for Dental Health will be paying children to trade in some of their Halloween candy, and sending that candy to troops overseas. On Nov. 2, from 3 to 7 p.m., kids can drop off their candy at Cascades Dental in Sterling, and receive $1 per pound. Every donation also enters the child into a drawing for a free iPod. All candy will be shipped overseas to troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Dr. Shreyesh Ruparelia said, “it's a win-win for everyone. Kids can eat a little less candy and do something great for the troops.” Dr. Ruparelia can be reached at Cascades Dental, the site of the candy drop-off, which is at 46032 McClellan Way,in Sterling. For further details, call 703-444-5095.

Helping Sophia: Cascades resident Sophia Martinese has submitted a video to NBC in a bid to be selected a “Today” show Kid Correspondent. If her video is selected as a finalist within the next four weeks, the community can help her to a win by clicking on her entry and voting for her at www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33228407/.

National Cathedral tour: The Day Trippers Group of the CountrySide Women’s Club has a limited number of seats available for a full English tea on Tuesday, Nov. 17, following the group’s tour of the National Cathedral in Washington. The cathedral tour will focus on the history, architecture and artwork of the church. Carpools will meet at Lansdowne at 11:45 a.m. and at Great Falls Plaza at noon. To reserve a spot at the tea, a check for $25 must be received by Tuesday, Nov. 3. For more information, call 703-430-2808.

Halloween contest: The annual CountrySide Halloween House decorating contest takes place on Thursday, Oct. 29. This year, for the first time, there will be one winner per type of house (single family home, townhouse or condominium). The neighborhoods of Belmont, Foxfield, Rokeby and Oatlands will have one winner. The Morven, Oakridge and Welbourne neighborhoods will have two winners. If you think your house (or your neighbor’s) will be one of the best, call Kelly at 703-430-0715, ext. 16.
