Local wineries celebrate harvest

October is Wine Month, and there is no better place to celebrate than Loudoun County. As the vintners bring in the harvest, it's time to experience the crisp fall air while kicking back with a glass of a local wine.

For a true fall experience, many of Loudoun's local wineries and vineyards are hosting fall festivals or outdoor events, where guests can taste wine while enjoying live music.

"We're doing several things for Wine Month," said Rob Piziala, director of sales at Tarara Vineyard in Leesburg.

Tarara is hosting live music and private reserve tastings every weekend throughout October. Visitors can also catch a glimpse of the harvesting process.

"We're at the point now where there's something going on every day," Piziala said.

Tasting fees at Tarara are $10 or $20 for premier tastings. For more information, visit www.tarara.com.

Bluemont Vineyard is "in fall harvest mode this time of year," according to owner Bruce Zurchmeida. In addition to live music, Bluemont is introducing an 06/07 Norton Blend and will feature local foods. Visitors interested in seeing the winemaking process can set up a tour. Tasting fees are $5 a person. For more information, visit www.bluemontvinyard.com.

Although Middleburg's Chrysalis Vineyard celebrated its harvest at the beginning of October, there is still plenty to enjoy.

"We provide an experience beyond just tasting wine," said Hump Atorga, director of hospitality. "We don't just pour the wine, we tell the story of who we are.

"It's a 412-acre working winery. When visitors are here for a tasting, they are able to overlook the crushing and the wine workers," Atorga said.

Loudoun's restaurants are celebrating Wine Month as well. Purcellville's Magnolias at the Mill is holding its annual Italian Wine dinner Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. The event will feature a five-course meal and six accompanying wines. For more information, visit www.magnoliasmill.com/special events.

Leesburg's The Wine Kitchen is also marking Wine Month with a wine dinner. Taking place Oct. 21, The Wine Kitchen will be celebrating another event of October -- Halloween -- with its "Trick and Treat" dinner. The Wine Kitchen also will feature a new local wine this month, the Chrysalis Norton. For more information, visit www.thewinekitchen.com.

Whatever your tastes, make sure to pick up a bottle of local wine and enjoy Wine Month.
