Malone awardees, National Merit honors, The Nutcracker, and more

Malone awardees: A total of 12 students at three area middle schools are recipients of the 2009 Teri and Shari Malone Awards. The award winners at River Bend Middle School are Melissa Guidry (Art), Cristina Porto (Math), Daniel Gil (Music) and Robert Tagliaferri (Science). The awardees at Seneca Ridge Middle School are Nicole Tirella (Art), Michael Scheaffer (Math), Turner Thornberry (Music) and Michaela Brown (Science). The award recipients at Sterling Middle School are Crizalie Mina (Art), Michael Slobodnjak (Math), Amanda Godby (Music) and Leesun Chea (Science). Each student receives a recognition plaque and $250 in scholarship assistance to help develop their skills. The award program was created to honor the memory of Teri and Shari Malone, 14-year-old twins who lost their lives in an auto accident in 1989.

National Merit honors: Three local high school students were recently named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists: Taylor Berrett (Dominion High School), Adam Bradley (Potomac Falls High School) and Rachael Diniega (Potomac Falls High School). Anna-Luisa Mirto of Potomac Falls High School was recognized as a National Hispanic Scholar. Robert Washington of Potomac Falls High School was named National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalist. Student eligibility for National Merit Scholarship honors is determined by scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

The Nutcracker: Tickets are now available for the Loudoun Ballet Company’s 20th annual full-length professional production of the Nutcracker, to be presented at Park View High School in Sterling. The performances take place on two weekends, Dec. 12-13 and Dec. 19-20. The Saturday shows begin at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The Sunday performances begin at 2:30 p.m. Advance reserved seats are $20 for adults and $15 for children (12 and under) and seniors (60 and above). Premium reserved seating is priced at $25 for all seats. Tickets are available at the company’s business office at 15 N. King Street, Suite 201A, in Leesburg or by phone at 703-771-8074.

Food drive: The Cascades Community Association holds an ongoing food drive for neighbors in need. Please keep this project in mind as you prepare your holiday donations. Nonperishable food items may be dropped off at the Lowes Island Community Center in a receptacle inside the front door. For more information, call 703-406-0820.

Book reports: The Cascades Women’s Book Club meets Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. to begin the holiday season with the group’s second annual Book Report Night. New members are welcome to attend.
