River Creek/Lansdowne
Blood drive, golf tournament, golf news, and more
By Joe Motheral
Blood drive: On Thursday, Nov. 5, the River Creek Club will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. for donating blood. This year the American Red Cross has teamed up with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. A donation to the SGK cause, which searches for a cure for breast cancer, will be made on behalf of those giving blood. The club hopes to get at least 50 volunteers to be part of this important mission. Call 703-779-2022 to sign up.
Golf tournament: This past weekend, The Golf Club of Lansdowne had its annual Legends versus Lions golf tournament. The Lions team won by a score of 333 to 315 points, with one point awarded for the winner of each hole. The Legends team consisted of those golfers 55 and older; the Lions under 55.
Golf news: On Sunday, Nov. 1, the Mens Golf Association will hold its year-end "shamble" golf tournament and awards dinner beginning with an 11 a.m. shotgun start.
On Monday, Nov. 2, the golf course at River Creek will be open to members and their guests with a special guest fee of $55. Normally on Mondays the course is closed for maintenance or corporate outings. It’s an opportunity for golfers outside the community to enjoy golfing at River Creek.
On Thursday, Nov. 12, the Women’s Golf Association will have its year-end banquet at 6:30 p.m. Voting is under way to elect WGA officers. Candidates are Pat Luckett for president; Diane Scheurich, treasurer; Lynn Powderly, secretary; Lou Anne Brossman and Katie Harell, at-large board members.
Following that on Sunday, Nov. 15, the club will have its annual "Turkey Shoot" when the Pilgrims and Indians battle it out on the golf course instead of in the woods and trails of old Virginia. Turkeys (for the oven) will be doled out to the winners.
