Science scholar, American Legion, MOMS meeting and more

Science scholar: Jonathan Wyers, a student at Potomac Falls High School, recently received a Certificate of Distinction for his participation in the 2009 University of Florida Student Science Training Program. The seven-week residential session for gifted and academically talented high school students focuses on science, mathematics, computers and engineering. While attending the program, Jonathan worked with Dr. Renato Figueiredo in the University of Florida’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department on a project titled “Creating an Application in Python to Assist in Monitoring a Peer-to-Peer Network.” Jonathan’s work also included a three-hour interdisciplinary honors seminar on mobile computing.

MOMS meeting: Acupuncturist Amy Beth Rautner, founder of the Chi of Life Acupuncture Clinic, discusses the benefits of this ancient form of therapy at the monthly meeting of the MOMS Club of Sterling East on Friday, Nov. 6. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at the Sterling Community Center at 120 Enterprise St. Youngsters can play while the moms mingle. Prospective members are invited to attend. Shakespeare in Sterling: The Sterling Playmakers present William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” at the Theatre at Sterling Middle School on weekends from Nov. 6 through Nov. 15. The show begins at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6 and 7. The Sunday, Nov. 8, performance begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 and may be purchased at the door. The “Twelfth Night” cast includes Joe Bates, Dan Clark, Corinne Fox, Justin Fox, Herb Fuller, Kelly Gray, Grant Hilderbrandt, Leandra Lynn, Marcus Miller, Meg Roosma, Bob Rosenberg, Leland Shook, Terry Smith and Scott Strasbaugh.
