Heritage claims region volleyball bid
The Heritage Pride secured a region tournament berth in their first season at the Group AAA classification following a 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19 victory against Battlefield in the Cedar Run District tournament semifinals Nov. 3 in Leesburg.
Junior Lian Bernett slammed 19 kills and senior Megan Beckwith scooped 29 digs as the Pride (14-7) won for the seventh time in their last eight matches.
"Talent is talent wherever you go. If you have the players, if you have the athletes, you are going to do well whether its AA or AAA," said Heritage coach Carmel Keilty, in her 20th season as a varsity head volleyball coach.
"It's just a matter of the kids stepping up to a different district and different group of schools they haven't played," Keilty continued. "I think our kids have done the job. We played some tough teams this year and they've beaten quite a few of them."
Pride junior Emma Le Maitre recorded seven kills and nine digs, while Dariel Montanez had six kills. Stephanie Yokoyama dished out 42 assists to go with 12 digs, and Skye Young produced five kills and two blocks.
Tuesday's win sets up a showdown between Heritage and top seed Loudoun Valley in the Cedar Run tourney championship match. The Vikings -- who defeated the Pride twice in the regular season, including a tight five-game match Oct. 20 -- will host the title clash Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
"We were very close last time we played them," Keilty noted. "Every game was within two points. Just having that opportunity to step on the court one more time with them and possibly beat them will be awesome. But you know, the kids are in the region tournament. I think it's a real tribute to the kids for how hard they worked to get to that level."
The AAA Northwest Region tournament begins Nov. 10 with quarterfinal round matches.
