Around the towns
Here's what is happening in Loudoun's western towns.
Hamilton
People’s business
The Water and Sewer Committee meets Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. The Parks Committee, still wrestling with parking, zoning issues and restricting access to the town’s park, meets Nov. 6, also at 7 p.m.
Purcellville
Get on the Trolley Tour
The town’s third annual Christmas Lights Trolley Tour is set for Dec. 11 and Dec. 13, 5:30 to 9 p.m. both days. The trolley will chug out of the gazebo every half hour, the last ride leaving at 7:45 p.m.
Contact Cheryl Herman at the Town office (cherman@purcellvilleva.gov) to get your street or neighborhood on the tour – get everyone on the block involved in decorating, and then join the tour.
Tickets to ride the trolley are free but a necessity, and will be handed out first-come first-served at the gazebo. No reservations.
Sports Pavilion debut
Magic Kayhan’s Purcellville Sports Pavilion has been open for more than a month, and invites one and all to a grand opening Nov. 7, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 310 N. 21st St. Visitors will go on guided tours of the aerobics, yoga, boxing and agility training areas, and everyone through the door will be registered to win prizes including a year’s membership for fitness training.
At noon, after the official ribbon cutting, Kayhan will dedicate the indoor sports field to Army Spc. Stephan Mace, who died Oct. 3 in Afghanistan. Mace was a member of Kayhan’s Olympic Gym on North Maple Avenue.
Inova Urgent Care debuts
The new Inova Urgent Care Center, 205 E. Hirst Road, is already open for business, and will celebrate a Fall Festival with the entire community Nov. 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring the family for face painting, health screenings and seasonal flu shots.
The center is open weekdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and weekends and holidays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Turkey Trot time
The annual Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run is Nov. 8, start time 8:30 a.m. The fun will start and end at the Loudoun Valley Community Center, and the new route takes runners through historic neighborhoods and Main Street. Go to the town Web site for registration information. All proceeds benefit activities and day care at the community center.
Sweats for Vets
Collection of sweatpant/sweatshirt sets for veterans and service members continues until Veterans Day. Drop the sweats off at Town Hall before Nov. 11 – the office will be closed the 11th for Veterans Day. VFW Post 1177 and American Legion Post 293 will distribute the sweats to the service members and veterans who need them at local military hospitals.
The Loudoun County High School Veterans Club is helping with the project, and will host a Veterans Day Program, “Brothers and Sisters in Arms,” Nov. 11, 7 p.m. at the high school. The staff singers, the wind ensemble, orchestra and sign language classes will be featured.
So green they're gold
The town has been recertified, along with 206 other local governments in Virginia, by the Virginia Municipal League as a Green Government.
Purcellville also placed first in the under-15,000 population category and was certified at the gold level. The league’s Go Green Virginia environmental initiative is a friendly competition among member governments to encourage implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions to reduce carbon emissions. Member cities and towns earn “green points” by implementing or adopting up to 30 policies in 11 categories ranging from energy efficiency and green buildings to land-use and innovation.
The town’s Environment Committee will come up with ideas for spending the $3,000 that came with the first place award.
More information about the town’s green program – including LED street lights and water conservation incentives – over the past year is in “Go Green Purcellville – Highlights of Innovative Efforts, Policies and Activities for the Environment,” at the town’s Web site (http://www.purcellvilleva.gov).
Round Hill
Public Hearing
The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Nov. 10 on the Round Hill United Methodist Church’s request for a Special Exception Permit to expand the church at 11 W. Loudoun St. Copies of the proposed major expansion are at the Town Office.
