Waterford fund meets challenge goal

The Waterford Foundation's Raise the Roof Capital Campaign to rebuild the Old School destroyed by fire in January 2007 is almost halfway to its $1.6 million goal.

In late June, the foundation announced it has raised $300,000 in private contributions, and thus qualified for a $100,000 matching grant from the Cabell Foundation. Added to what has already been raised, this brings the fund to 40 percent of the goal.

Plans to rebuild the auditorium are shovel-ready, but work will not start until the fund reaches $1.2 million.

The 1911 classroom building escaped largely unscathed from the fire which destroyed the auditorium. The classroom's restoration was completed in March of this year.

The new auditorium will be frame, like the one that was lost, but will have modern communication and will be “green” – the heating and air conditioning systems will be geothermal.
