Two Leesburg men drown in Potomac
Two bodies found in the Potomac River in Maryland June 24 have been identified as Leesburg men who were swept away by the river's current June 21.
The men are Abdul Doraney, 22, and Asad Nabatzahi, 20, both of the 19400 block of Mill Dam Place in Leesburg.
According to Montgomery County, Md., Police, shortly after 4:30 p.m. June 21, someone saw six people in the water near Old Angler's Inn in Potomac, Md., yelling for help. The witness saw four people get out of the water, while the other two were swept downriver. The initial search was unsuccessful, and it was discontinued that evening, police said.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel, U.S. Park Police Aviation, and Fairfax County Police Aviation assisted with that attempted rescue.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police resumed the search June 22 but could not find the swimmers.
On June 24, shortly before noon, a hiker near the Old Angler’s Inn saw a body floating in the water. Then, at about 9 p.m., another body was seen floating in the water north of the I-495 American Legion Bridge, police said.
On June 26, the bodies were confirmed to be those of Doraney and Nabatzahi. They were identified through fingerprint analysis.
