Park View graduate heads to Republican convention.

This September, Michael Monrroy, 18, of Sterling, will get to experience the 2008 Republican National Convention in Minneapolis firsthand.

He is this year's national winner of the Republican half of the Crash the Parties competition, sponsored by SiTV, a Latino cable channel, and Voto Latino, a group that encourages voting.

By placing a video of himself online at www.crashtheparties08.com and a message detailing his ambitions, Monrroy received more than 2,000 votes and was chosen to represent Latino youth at the convention.

He will report from the convention floor for SiTV and will blog, letting young Americans know what is going on.

"I'll be able to reflect upon the amazing experience I'm going through," he said. "I want to be a good example to other young people and show them what they can do if they work hard."

Monrroy is a political science major at American University and said he hopes to become a politician someday.

He said he is especially looking forward to interviewing Republicans, including presidential candidate John McCain.
