Supervisor responds to Planning Commission cancellations

*DELGAUDIO STATEMENT ON PLANNING COMMISSION CANCELLATIONS*

This statement responds to press inquiries and repeats statements made to other reporters.

As a courtesy and fairness, I share these comments.

The recently published article in the Loudoun Times Mirror entitled "E-mail leads to boycott of transportation vote"
reports two meetings, the June 25 and June 27 meetings, of the Planning commission being cancelled due to a lack of a quroum.

The article reports that an electronic message-- alledgely from another planning commissioner ---- to other planning commisson members encouraged them to "boycott" the meeting.

Anyone who orchestrates the disbanding of any government meeting or causes a meeting to be cancelled through any effort is to be condemned. I ask the board of supervisors to investigate and find out exactly how 2 separate meetings of the Planning Commission failed to achieve a quorum and that the board of supervisors, if necessary restore a sense of confidence that the Planning Commission continues to function.

In response to the statement made by some that "its only two meetings" and "the transportation plan can wait until September", I can only state that as far as my position: it is intolerable and not acceptable for anyone to purposely encourage dereliction  in their duty to perform their responsibilities at scheduled meetings.

The board of supervisors should at the very minimum discuss this topic as a committee of the whole at its July 7 meeting to assure planning commissioners and the public that we-- the board---  require their attendance at planning commission meetings. While these are part time jobs with a small stipend, and a robust nightly schedule the public really requires full representation.

Tonight, Thursday, July 2 in the Purcellville Room at 6 p.m. in the Loudoun County  Government Building at one Harrison Road in downtown Leesburg, I hope they can achieve a quorum and that no member of the planning commission in the future encourages another not to attend another public meeting in order to stall or postpone consideration of a public action.
