McAuliffe gains a strong lead in campaign donations
Campaign contributions can win or lose an election for a candidate. Most elections, side with the candidate who raises the most green.
Virginia's gubernatorial elections have been no exception with most of the winners having heavier wallets.
For example: In 2001
Mark Warner (D) raised: $1.36 million
Mark Earley (R) raised: $918,026
This standard, however, changed during the 2005 race when Jerry Kilgore (R) out fund-raised now-Gov. Tim Kaine (D) more than $2 million.
Kilgore raised: $5.03 million
Kaine raised: $2.63 million
This year's race:
Campaign finance reports, due earlier this week, are showing Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe (of Fairfax) in the fund-raising lead with his Democratic opposition falling far behind him.
In order of most raised
McAuliffe (D): $4.215 million
Bob McDonnell (R): $2.219 million
Brian Moran (D): $804,485
Creigh Deeds: $728,662
While three Democrats will fight it out this spring to claim their party's nomination, McDonnell runs unopposed for the Republican ticket.
In this coming-week's paper (April 22), the Loudoun Times-Mirror will take a look at campaign donations in the 2009 House of Delegates races, and see whether these donations are recession proof.
