Local hardballers going old-style
A few ballplayers with local ties will be swinging with a wood stick over the summer in various collegiate wood-bat leagues.
Mike Stancik, former Stone Bridge Bulldog and rising sophomore at Longwood University, will suit up for the Fairfax Nationals of the Clark Griffith League.
He'll be joined in Fairfax by current Bulldog Johnny Bladel, who has been granted the rare exception of playing in a collegiate summer league before he plays his freshman season in college. Bladel will be a James Madison Duke next spring.
The Fairfax Nationals will play their home games at Paul VI High School this year, and admission to Griff League games is free.
Geoff McCowat, a reliever with American International College, will be throwing against wood bats for the next couple months. The ex-Dominion Titan will top off his freshman season with a stint in the Eastern Collegiate Baseball League, hurling for the Rome (N.Y.) Thunderbolts.
Cole Shain, a lefty hurler with William & Mary and ex of Broad Run, is in Montpelier with the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Former Heritage Pride ballplayer Scott Van Dusseldorp, a third baseman with the Division III World Series club of the Shenandoah University Hornets, is manning the hot corner for the Haymarket Senators of the Valley Baseball League.
I'll post more summer destinations for local kids as I learn them.
