It's a Great Time to Live in Ashburn!

Anyone who knows me knows I am a message board and blog junkie- it’s like a peek inside of the skulls of your friends and neighbors! I have to admit, I am baffled when I read negative opinions and complaints- we live in an amazing county, and it only takes a brief look around your life to realize it. Of course there are issues: poorly planned roads, random heinous crime now and then, wonderful businesses having to close their doors, but for the most part? WOW.

The Boy had the opportunity to go to the State Little League Tournament after his team became the District 16 Champs (ok THAT was shameless, selfish self-promotion, but the next part isn’t!) This team of 9/10 year old All Stars received tremendous support from the president of Dulles Little League (DLL) and the organizer of the District tournament, who traveled to Luray to watch them play, and made these boys feel like their accomplishments really meant something to our community.  It’s the kind of camaraderie and support that we’ve felt in our 5 years and counting experience with DLL, and it’s why we are so involved with such a supportive and positive organization.

Our (not just MINE but yours too!) neighbors are good- great- Samaritans who jump up in an instant to help a family in need. There have been fires, terminal illnesses, tragedies and local families simply in need of assistance, and from message boards to emails- the word gets out. The donations and helpful hands pour in, and people who have never even met you are jumping in to help you back on your feet. Tearful, grateful neighbors are in disbelief at how quickly their community has rallied around them. I’ve been on the receiving end of such kindness, and it’s humbling to live among such compassionate people.

Neighborhoods sponsor fun, family-friendly events! Concerts like Sizzlin’ Summer Concerts in Brambleton or Broadlands Live! in the Broadlands bring people together through music and provide an excellent venue for local performers. From outdoor movie nights to festivals, from pet friendly swims to teen foam parties- Ashburn community HOA’s and committees work hard to provide the kind of entertainment that residents want and can enjoy with the whole family.

And don’t get me started on what good neighbors so many of our local businesses are. Bonefish, Clyde’s, Glory Days- chain restaurants whose Ashburn locations have been amazing supporters of local events and charities. Small local businesses- too many to mention- hold fundraisers and donate profits and products to local teams and charities, making so many events possible right here at home. Even the preschools and martial arts studio here put on events to benefit others.

How about some more fun? Live musical artists perform at places like Finnegan’s and Bluz Brothers on a regular basis. Karaoke, Texas Hold ‘Em and ½ price Wine Nights can be found in places like Mezza Grill, Village Grill, and Broadlands Pub. Kids Eat Free somewhere in Ashburn on any given Monday through Thursday in places like Foster’s Grille, Fuddruckers and aforementioned restaurants as well!

And sports? I’ve attended awesome MMA events over at the Dulles Sportsplex. If you aren’t watching sports in your neighbor’s basement- you know- that guy with the home theatre with a 70”+ movie screen and fully stocked bar, complete with 30 year old scotch, a dart board and pool table- you can watch regular and PPV events in almost every plaza in Ashburn- believe me- I’ve done it! Weekend warriors can tear their ACLs on softball, kickball and soccer teams, and kids can play anything from Dodgeball at Diamond Sports Training to Flag Football with the NoVa Football League.

Maybe some of you have never lived in a community that didn’t offer the amazing number of activities, amenities, events, support that we enjoy in Ashburn, but I can tell you that this is a RARE and wonderful benefit to Living in LoCo. Talk to your friends who live in other counties, in other states- just ask.  You’ll find out how privileged we are- and you might even join a committee or two to give back to the communities that give so much to you.

Yeah, we’ll always have vandals who break into cars and egg homes, we’ll have too much traffic on too few roads, we’ll have controversy over what should be built where, and pranksters in the Broadlands will continue to fill the fountain with soap so the bubbles will overflow. But you know what else we’ll always have? A friendly, amenity-rich, family-centric, beautiful place to live where we can raise our children with opportunities to succeed at whatever they choose, and a childhood full of wonderful memories.
