School Board adopts revised goals

Members of the Loudoun County School Board adopted a set of revised goals at their Sept. 8 meeting.

The board has been in discussion about revising its goals since April.

The new mission statement reads:

"The mission of the Loudoun County Public Schools is to work closely with students, families, and the community to provide a superior education, safe schools, and a climate for success. The educational programs of Loudoun County Public Schools will strive to meet or exceed federal, state, and local requirements for assessment of achievement and to promote intellectual growth, individual initiative, mutual respect, and personal responsibility for productive citizenship."

For student achievement some of the revised goals are to ensure that at least 92 percent of students pass all required Standards of Learning (SOL) tests and to identify and reduce disparity in achievement among all educationally accepted subgroups.

For curriculum development some of the goals include enhancing and expanding alternative education programs and expanding academy programs.

The new goals also include a class size of 22 for all elementary levels and goals for retention of staff, community relations and health and wellness.

The new Goals and Mission Statement replaces the goals the previous school board adopted Sept. 17, 2005.
